POSITION TITLE: EIDP Laboratory Technologist (1) Position.
LOCATION: Makerere University College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (COVAB) (Kampala) and/or at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) (Entebbe) under the Emerging Infectious Diseases Program (EIDP).
DURATION: 2 year contract renewable based on availability of funding

JOB SUMMARY:

The candidate will serve as a Laboratory Technologist for the Makerere University Walter Reed Project field office in Makerere at the COVAB Lab will be charged with undertaking sample processing, laboratory testing procedures under specific projects, ensure QA/QC procedures are maintained, Specimen accessioning, sample processing (preparation of cell lines, passaging of samples), sample storage, equipment monitoring, media preparation. Additionally she/he is expected to perform Laboratory safety duties and learn new research techniques as they come into the laboratory or assist visiting staff or new staff in conducting different experimental assays. The incumbent may be required to assist the Senior Laboratory Technologist in teaching new technologists, university students and student attachments in laboratory practices. The incumbent should be flexible and expect to work outside office hours including weekends and holidays as may be deemed necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Proficiently perform Specimen accessioning, including registration of specimens into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), preparation of sample for both testing and storage and become proficient enough to conduct the assay without daily oversight.
2. Proficiently perform sample processing and sample testing using the various testing algorithms at EIDL as established by the SOPs for each assay.
3. Proficiently perform QA/QC procedures, maintain and enforce all standard operating procedures as well as equipment maintenance and troubleshooting as may be required.
4. Must have knowledge of basic laboratory safety rules and equipment including identification of, precautions for, and emergency response to biological, chemical, electrical, mechanical, and physical hazards.
5. Work independently and/or with others, collect and transport samples from various surveillance sites using proper sample handling protocol as may be required. Sample collection may involve going on water, climbing rocky areas, lifting, visiting marshy areas, markets, farms and other hazardous sites.
6. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
i. Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences or any related science laboratory field. Diploma in medical laboratory technology will be an added advantage.
ii. The candidate should have at least 5 years minimal experience working in a busy biomedical research environment

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Research Scientist.

PHYSICAL ABILITY:

The incumbent should have ability to travel to program sentinel sites for sample collection within the country as may be required. The incumbent may from time to time be required to lift some lab supplies to and from the lab to the required destination as may be directed by superiors.

POSITION TITLE: Data Entry Specialist (1)

Location: Plot 42 Nakasero Road
Duration: One Year contract renewable based on funding

Job Summary:

The incumbent will serve as a Data Entry Specialist for the Makerere University-Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) located at Plot 42 Nakasero Road. The individual will serve under the immediate supervision of the Senior Data Manager His/her primary responsibility will be to assist with the capture, and storage of data (both electronic and manual) generated from the MUWRP research studies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 To perform data entry, cleaning, and filing of Case Report Form (CRFs) and other study subject data documents
 Tracking of data collection forms & laboratory results
 A clear understanding of all the relevant Standard Operating Procedures for data capture and storage at MUWRP’s Data Management Center
 A clear understanding of the current research studies at the MUWRP
 Attend study and departmental meetings as required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 Performs both manual and electronic data capture (when available)
 Ensures proper filing of CRFs and other study subject data documents
 Follows up data queries until resolution
 Performs data cleaning as required
 Tracks CRFs and other study results
 Perform any other relevant duties as might be assigned by the Data Management Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 Diploma in a data related field.
 A minimum of 6 months relevant experience, including data entry in a biomedical research environment
 Fluency in verbal and written English
 Highly organized and sensitive to detail
 Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision
 Experience in use of data entry platforms like MS-Access, ODK, Epi-Data , Epi-Info etc.

PHYSICAL ABILITY:

Ability to professionally communicate in writing and verbally or other means deemed appropriate for this position. The ability to travel within all MUWRP work sites.
