Emerging Infectious Diseases Programme (EIDP) at MUWRP started to support early detection and response to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases because of the impact and frequency of the diseases across the globe.

This followed the threats of an influenza pandemic at the beginning of the 20th century. With support from the United States of America’s Department of Defence’s Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System (DoD-GEIS), MUWRP established capabilities for influenza that has since expanded to cover other emerging and re-emerging infections diseases in collaboration with various partners.
