LABORATORY
MUWRP has a state of the art laboratory in Kampala outfitted with modern equipment and participates in multiple external quality control/quality assurance programs. The lab was accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) in June 2005. Its clinical capabilities include testing for HIV, Hepatitis B and C; syphilis, pregnancy, urinalysis, heamatology, malaria microscopy, chemistry and CD4 determination using flow cytometry. Research capabilities include PBMC cryopreservation, HIV sub typing as well as numerous assays to assess how well a person's immune system responds to HIV.
The MUWRP laboratory provides services to several external protocols to enable other local research to be supported by a quality laboratory. In addition MUWRP laboratory has been an occupational trainer to many students in a plethora of research arenas through out Uganda. It has a team of 15 well trained staff headed by 2 lab directors and continues to expand and bring on new and novel technologies that will bring Uganda to the forefront in HIV vaccine research.
In addition, MUWRP has a sophisticated field laboratory located in Kayunga district. This laboratory is staffed by 3 laboratory technologists who perform PBMC cryopreservation, HIV rapid testing, hematology, chemistry and CD4 testing by FACSCount. This laboratory supports the research cohort as well as PEPFAR activities.
